Scary Movie Toilet humor. Sex jokes. Spoofs. Do we ever grow out of our ability to crack up at the mere mention of any of these? Judging by the guffaws all over the movie theater (by people my age and older, mostly) I would have to say no. Originally slated to be called "Scream if you know what I did last halloween", Scary Movie is the brainchild of Keenan Ivory Wayans, the head of that wacky family who burst onto the scene in the early 1990s with their ‘black Saturday Night Live’, In Living Color. The story follows a bunch of teens who are at the center of a murderous psycho mystery. The virginal Cindy Campbell is the lead character and the focus of the killer’s vengeance. Hmmm, Neve Campbell portrayed Sydney in the Scream movies...coincidence? What follows is an almost verbatim take on the first Scream, with references to Halloween, I Know What You Did Last Summer,The Blair Witch Project and Scream 3 splashed throughout. The standing rumor is that the creators of this flick are not making much of a profit because of all the royalties they need to pay to Dimension Films for the likeness to Scream. Whether or not it’s true doesn’t really matter - because this is one hysterical movie. My only complaint is that some of the raunchy jokes are taken a bit too far in my estimation. It is also sometimes difficult to watch the sheer stupidity of Doofy, the deputy who falls in love with Gail Hailstorm. Now, I am not the poster child for PC, but his character was a tad insulting to the mentally challenged. Despite that, my recommendation is to see this movie if you like films such as Airplane, the Naked Gun series and others in the same vein. A classic parody that belongs on the shelf right next to the ones mentioned above, in addition to Student Bodies and even Scream itself. Rating: * * *
