Center Stage Remember Fame? Didn’t you all want to be a student at the artsy school that all those kids were attending, if only for a moment? Come on, admit it! I will stand up as one of those who wanted to live the real life Fame. Who will join me? Your teenage daughter is going to like this movie. Not a whole lot of substance, but a cute story that will leave you with a warm, fuzzy feeling after watching it. Cast with a virtual list of unknowns (mostly very talented dancers with organizations like the San Francisco ballet and American Ballet Theater) the focus is pulled away from the words and towards the dancing. That’s the real reason to see this movie, folks. And this is where this movie excels. The story is that awful word that critics love to use and directors hate to read: predictable. But the dancing...ah, the dancing. It will mesmerize you; make you feel like you are at a live theater rather than a movie theater. I enjoyed Center Stage for this reason. However, as a movie that has widespread appeal over many different age groups, I would have to say that this movie falls short. Rating: * * * |
